Rubinia "Ruby" Suazo (Hill) was born to the late Luis Angel Suazo and the late Matilde Ramos Suazo on May 16th, 1941 in Urraco, Yoro, Honduras. She immigrated to the United States in 1967 leaving behind two of her young daughters for a shot at the American Dream. She lived in New York City for a short time, moved to Boston and settled in Providence, RI where she made her life.
Ruby found work as a live-in nanny on Blackstone Boulevard then held several other jobs before obtaining employment with the Providence School Department as a custodian for over 25 years before retiring in the early 90s.
A pioneer in her own right, Ruby was the seed of her entire immediate family. She was responsible for petitioning each of her siblings to the United States and if it had not been for her loving sacrifices, none of her siblings, nieces and nephews would be on American soil.
She dedicated her life to God at the age of 40 and raised her children to love, honor and serve the Lord. She was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Church of Deliverance under the auspices of Pastor Goldie L. Ricketts. Eventually becoming a faithful member of the Providence Assembly of God under the leadership of Pastor Charles Berkley Jr. for over 30 years until her transition.
As a faithful member, she dedicated her time serving on the usher board ministry, in the soup kitchen and within the food pantry ministry. She also, when needed, served as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking members and was always known to give food to those in need.
Exciting times for Ruby were her weekly meet-ups as a proud member of the St. Martin DePorres Senior Center in Providence where she enjoyed crafting, line dancing, zumba class and spending time with her golden girls at various outings.
But nothing brought more joy to her life than spending time with her family. Her brothers and sisters, her in-laws, nieces and nephews were incredibly special to her and she had a unique relationship with each of them.
Ruby always said the purpose of her life was to be a loving and dedicated mother to her four born daughters; Dilcia, Dafny (deceased), Arlett and Lahoma.
However, her life completely flipped upside down when she became a doting grandmother to her only granddaughter, Shaynah Rubinia and ten years later, her only grandson, Angel Moises. Ruby’s heart belonged to her grandkids whom she loved dearly.
Anyone who knows Ruby knows this: she loved her latin music, she was an excellent dancer, and she was a fashion queen; jewelry, purses, clothes and shoes were her weakness. She was a skilled card player who could take on anyone in pitty-pat. She was sassy and always had a funny comeback. Ruby was one of the most giving women and always had an encouraging word for anyone she loved, however, she was a “no nonsense” type of lady and had no problem putting anyone in their place when needed without warning.
Although she enjoyed her family life, she had opportunities to travel and see the world. She’s traveled all over the country including California, Arizona, Hawaii, various cities in Florida and overseas via a number of Caribbean Cruises. Ruby loved to travel back to her homeland of Honduras, never forgetting where she came from and she instilled that pride in her family.
Ruby leaves a proud legacy with her three daughters, Dilcia Morris of Laurel, MD; Arlett Ferreira (Eduardo Ferreira) of Cranston, RI and Teresa Lahoma Calix of Providence, RI. She also leaves behind the two apples of her eye, her grandchildren whom she adored more than anything, Shaynah Ferreira of Philadelphia, PA and Angel Calix of Providence, RI.
She was the wife of the late Moses Hill. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of brothers and sisters; Olga Velasquez, Maria Elena Castillo (Luis Castillo), Ana Luisa Murillo (Pompilio Murillo), Jose Leonel Suazo (Maria Suazo) and Amelia Suazo, all of Boston, MA. She's preceded in death by her late brother Ernesto Suazo of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Julio Suazo and Maria Teresa Suazo de Madrid of Boston, MA.
Ruby also leaves behind her sisters-in-law whom she always said were her sisters and best friends, Lucila Bustillo, Sandra Garay and Doris Espinal, all of Providence, RI as well as her sister-in-law Adie Hill of Lakeland, FL. She additionally leaves a host of nieces and nephews and godchildren whom she adored.
While our hearts are broken and we miss her dearly, we know to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. We know we will see her again.
The Viewing and Homegoing Celebration will be held on Friday, November 4th, 2022 at New Dimension Apostolic Center, 100 Niantic Ave., Providence, RI 02907. Viewing begins at 10:00am followed by Homegoing Celebration at 11:30am. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground Cemetery, Branch Ave., Providence, RI at 2:00pm.
